Merk Chicken Oxide & Neutrino

Shit, I've been shot.  I don't facking believe this, could everyone stop getting shot?

Merk Chicken celebrated their 1st birthday on Saturday 19th November at CAMP's basement, Old Street, Shoreditch.  Headlining the night were Oxide and Neutrino, true pioneers of the UK Garage scene.

The night started out with whistles being handed out on entry and the DJ unleashing instant rewinds with selections such as Sia - Little man (Wookie remix) and Musical Mob - Pulse X.

By the time Oxide & Neutrino arrived the crowd were ready to rave.  They started the set with the underground classic Bound 4 da reload, with Neutrino warming up on the mic, then went into the more commercial hit No good 4 me.  Oxide then smashed the place to bits with his selections.

The vibes and atmosphere were great, whistles being blown, gun fingers in the air, girls getting chirpsed left right and centre and everyone raving to 10 year old classics.  The venue added to the vibe as it was so hot everyone was soaked in sweat from raving so hard.

Here's a video from the crowd, complete with drunken singing along, whistles and camera shake - Oxide & Neutrino Bound 4 da reload at Merk Chicken.  Hopefully you can get a feel of what the vibe was like!

Thanks to Merk Chicken and the legends that are Oxide & Neutrino for a great night.  The only way they can top this is if they get the entirety of So Solid for the next event.

Here's a little taster of some of the tunes that were played:

Yeah, Maybe 20 at Alibi

The Yeah, Maybe boys are back in town with another night (Yeah, Maybe 20) at Alibi in Dalston this Saturday 12th October.  This time round they’ve managed to secure a 6AM license and the DJs on the decks will be Eliphino, Planus, Rattus Rattus (Urban Nerds collective) and the Yeah, Maybe regulars Fife, Lex Darker and Colonel.

There’s a promotional mix up on Mixcloud by Eliphino:

And the Facebook event is here.

Ps. A little birdy told me they may be giving away free beers before 10pm so get on down there early!

Jamie XX and Quayola: Structures

Jamie XX is one of the hottest and most talked about guys on the contemporary UK bass/post dubstep scene at the moment.  In association with Rizlab he performed a 3 hour set with visuals by Quayola at the Classic Car Club venue on Old Street, Shoreditch.

We managed to get guestlist thanks to a competition by Chew the fat.  There were a lot of media types there and the event was being filmed, presumably for Rizlab's project, 'Structures'.  The vibe was a little strange initially but as the alcohol started to flow and the media types vacated, people were dancing to Jamie's usual mix of bass and post dubstep.

He dropped tunes such as far nearer, his remix of Adele, and my current favourite Blawan getting me down but surprisingly missed out a few others like his remix of Gil Scott-Heron NY is killing me (which a few of the guys in the crowd were chanting for at the end of his set).

This visuals from Quayola were good to look at on the wall but kind of reminded me of the late 90's and Winamp3.  Overall the music was great, the venue was interesting but it needed to be small and with less media, more real fans.  Stick Jamie XX in a smaller venue and it would be banging, no doubt.

Rizlab posted a mix by Jamie XX as a teaser for the night.

Here’s some photos from the night, you can find the rest on Flickr by James Morris.
